Barbara/Sarah, and protein benefits
<<but, some of us… myself in there… struggle forever… and I am
resigned to the fact that it is my lot. I am also resigned that I am to be
an example… to show others that, in my writing, I am human, but alive and
wonderfully healthy and furiously happy… even in the difficult stretches.
I hope this post reflects at least some of my emotions.

Barbara -
Your posts ALWAYS reflect a wide range of *real* emotions. Sometimes you move
me to tears.
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Sarah’s diagnosis, and wish
you both the very best.
Also, if you want to dump more/worse (?), some have had good luck resetting
their “dump-o-meters” by going on a “protein feast”. That is basically just
using protein supplements 4,6,8 times a day for 3 days. If you *must* eat, eat
only protein foods and a little green leafies. (Very lo-carb vegs). Be sure you
use very lo-carb (low sugar) protein shakes, like those from VitaLady.com.
The shakes are also very effective in helping to promote healing. Dr. Scott
Connelly, who developed MetRx supps, is interesting character. Wrote “The 6Pack
Prescription” and “BodyRx”. The blurb that follows is from his bio . . .
<<Dr. Scott Connelly has devoted his life to the science of nutrition and
fitness, and is considered around the world as a leading expert in the field of
human nutrition and metabolism. A summa cum laude graduate in neuro-physiology
from Boston Universtiy, Dr. Connelly has distinguished his career in
anesthesiology, internal medicine, intensive care and cardiovascular medicine.
During his internship and residency at Harvard Medical School’s prestigous
Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Connelly began working with critically ill
intensive care patients. In order to help his patients maintain their health, he
began researching and formulating products to help prevent the loss of muscle
mass. What he learned about the effects of nutrients and exercise on human
metabolism, body composition, disease prevention and immune system function,
however, would soon have more far reaching impact. While continuing his research
as a Senior Fellow in intensive care medicine at Stanford University, Dr.
Connelly created a high quality protein formulation, which he trademarked
Metamyosyn. This became the key ingredient in MET-Rx, the high protein low-fat
vitamin and mineral enriched drink mix he went on to invent.
The MET-Rx formulation took Dr. Connelly over twenty years to develop, and is
currently being issued as standard nutritional protocol in Harvard Medical
Schools Brigham and Women’s Burn Care Trauma Unit and Braintree Rehabilitation
Hospital.
And of course, chemo and radiation therapies can cause loss of appetite, etc. I
encourage you to help Sarah find a protein shake/supplement to help get her thru
this.
Ok, I didn’t really mean this post to be about protein supplements. I use for
not only supplementation, but appetite control, and because my doc mandates 120
grams of protein by supps/day.
But, Barbara . . . many good wishes for you two, big eHugs, and while I don’t
pray, I’m holding good thoughts of the best outcome for you both. (Is that
agnostic/atheist prayer? <grin
Thanks for all you do.
Rachel, who’s down more than 100 pounds since 3/13/03! Yay! Medium tops, 15/16
jeans - used to be 3X tops, 2X pants with elastic or drawstring waists! I can
shop at Target or Walmart, but who wants to? Thrift shops, my treasure hunt of
choice! <grin
