Dehydration and acid reflux

Hi Donna. Well, I can only speak for myself on this one, and I have no
scientific data to back me up (it’s 5:01am, LOL) but I do believe we get
dehydrated MUCH easier than pre gastric bypass. Reason being, I RARELY drank any
water before surgery, I was a regular pepsi girl and drank soda all the time.
Never felt dehydrated, though most people are in a constant state of partial
dehydration and never know it, they mistake the thirst for hunger. Anyways…
Now post op, all I drink is water (except for my am coffee and the treat trip
to Starbucks for a Chai latte w/soy).
Over the summer I got really lax in drinking my water and I had 2 episodes of
syncope (fainting), 2 trips to the ER because of it, all from dehydration. On
those 2 particular days, I had barely any water, and ended up out cold, whacking
my head and tailbone, needing I.V. rehydration.
I don’t have any medical data to back this up, only my own experience and what
the ER docs told me, but all my tests came back fine except my electrolytes were
a little off and my body was dry as a bone.

Since these episodes I have not gone one day without getting at least 64oz of
WATER in, and most days 80+ oz. I have not had one of these episodes in over 2
months and I believe my diligence about hydration now is working.
Actually, it’s not diligence, it’s paranoia. I am TERRIFIED of this happening
again, and GOD FORBID should it happen while I am driving because I could not
live with myself if I hurt or injured someone else because I didn’t feel like
drinking my water that day.
I hope this helps, I know it’s not scientific, but it’s my story.

Subject: dehydration and acid reflux
should know the answer to this, but I don’t. Do we get dehydrated
more than people who haven’t had gastric bypass, or do we just have to
drink water like everyone else does? What is the reason behind the
water intake?
Another thing is why do we get heartburn if we don’t have any gastric
juices in our stoma? So how do we get it?
