Tubes?

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Hi All,
I keep hearing about tubes after surgery. Is this with Lap RNY? Are there
tubes coming out of every little opening? Do you leave the hospital with
tubes? Are you able to wear loose clothes over the tubes? Is there anything
else I should know about these tubes? Thanks! Sherry

Post-op Depression. HELP!

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

I’m six days post-op and am in a terrible funk - very, very blue. I’m
wondering if I did a horrible thing by having this surgery - and that
I’ll pay the consequences for it the rest of my life. I’m greiving
my strength, the foods and quantities I used to be able to eat, and
my health (I was very healthy before going into surgery). I suppose
this is common, but rarely do you see anyone talking about it online -
the first two weeks after surgery.
And I’m sick to death of all these protein drinks! I don’t like ANY
of the Nectars well enough to WANT to drink them - everything his a
chore. I’m scared that nothing is ever going to taste good to me
ever again - and that when I WILL be able to eat, the amount will be
so small, that it won’t hardly be worth the trouble. . .
To make matters worse, I gained 12 pounds of water weight while at
the hospital and now, six days later, my NET weight loss is 1-1/2
pounds. I could have lost more than 1-1/2 pounds in a week WITHOUT

Manicures and Pedicures and surgery

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Hi,
A friend just mentioned to me that I might not be able to have nail
polish on for the surgery? I have gels nails, which is a coating
made for cancer patients from seaweed that is a clear coating with
nail polish under that to make a french manicure.
I was planning on having my manicure and pedicure the Saturday
before the surgery as I won’t be doing it the Saturday after… :) Thank you!

about those knees

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

my story is that i had severe knee damage and after my wls and at about 100 lbs
down i had both my knees replaced one at a time six weeks apart. the day after
the staples came out, 3 weeks each i was back in the pool carefully doing
arthritis water aerobics. this form of rehab was so sucessful that i got no
formal rehab at all except for 2 visits by a home rehab person to check to see
if i was doing my exercises correctly. the third time she came i drove her out
for coffee. the next knee there were no visits. nothing felt better in my life
as my knees the days after surgery when it became apparent that they hurt far
less than they did before surgery. having said that it took approximately 2 mos
for my knees to settle in pain free and i had full mobility because of all the
exercise, as in daily, all that exercise was what i was already doing to lose
all my weight so it was not additional. for me it has been a win win situation.
6 mos after the surgeries i went skiing, granted on the bunny slope but it was a
major thrill. so fear not..even if those knees really need replacement and you
will know after the first year of losing weight it is doable. like everything

surgery preparation

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I was wondering what one does to prepare for surgery? Do we all do the
same? Like NPO after when? Or do we have to cleanse like when having a
colonoscopy?
Another question. Please forgive my bluntness and apologies if my question
bothers any one, but what are our BM’s like after? Soft, hard, smelly? I
just need to know what the average is just in case I’m not. Thanks in
advance.

Barbara/Sarah, and protein benefits

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

<<but, some of us… myself in there… struggle forever… and I am
resigned to the fact that it is my lot. I am also resigned that I am to be
an example… to show others that, in my writing, I am human, but alive and
wonderfully healthy and furiously happy… even in the difficult stretches.
I hope this post reflects at least some of my emotions.

Barbara -
Your posts ALWAYS reflect a wide range of *real* emotions. Sometimes you move
me to tears.
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear of Sarah’s diagnosis, and wish
you both the very best.
Also, if you want to dump more/worse (?), some have had good luck resetting
their “dump-o-meters” by going on a “protein feast”. That is basically just
using protein supplements 4,6,8 times a day for 3 days. If you *must* eat, eat
only protein foods and a little green leafies. (Very lo-carb vegs). Be sure you

is it really finally here? THE day?

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

It is difficult to believe it is here. Tomorrow is my Lap RNY. I have
been working towards this day for almost a year. Heck sometimes it
feels like I have been working towards this my whole life. My life.
That is what this is about right? I have read until there are no
more books to read, I have searched the internet until I have every
worthwhile site bookmarked. I am active in 3 support groups. Yet I
cannot believe it is here. Sometimes I feel like I am already post-
op. People ask questions of post-ops and I have to stop myself from
answering. LOL. Than why is it that I am having such a difficult
time believing it is really going to happen? I imagine it is much
like my friends who have had baby’s describe `preparing’ for birth.
You know what it is supposed to be like, you’ve watched the movies,
read the books, heard the stories, but will it really be that way for
you once it really happens? What will the pain really be like? But,
nature just takes over. A baby.

to barbara

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

This is for you, Barbara. I had been reading your many emails for
months after I had my surgery and always found them inspiring, and a
great help. This is not meant to hurt you, I just need some answers,
and am hoping that it won’t be too painful for you to provide those for
me.
I stopped reading emails a few months ago, my life got too busy. Then
one night I had a dream that everyone was telling me to stop eating,
and the more they said that, the fatter I got, just like pre-op. I
woke up with the worst anxiety attack!! I got to 160 a few months ago
and have not lost any more. I am perfectly satisfied with where I am
at, I seemed to have leveled off, and have not gained any weight.
Well, after that dream I decided I needed to go back into the group.
First thing I did was to go into the archives and read your emails.
Imagine how I felt when I read that you had gained weight. The world
came crashing down on me, i did nothing but fight with my so, who one

Difficulty eating real protein

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Hi Everyone,
This is my first time writing. I had my surgery 4/18 and have lost 90 pounds.
I have a question. I have difficulty eating real protein, chicken, beef, etc. It
seems my stomach take 11/2 to 2 hours to empty and in the meantime I
feel very uncomfortable. Therefore, I just get the food out via forced vomiting.
I know this is not good and probably has contributed to the hiatel hernia, but
I don’t know what to do. If I eat chips and candy, they go down fine, but the
health stuff does not. I am very frustrated. My reflux has gotten worse. The
surgeon has put me on carafate to neutralize the acid and I am on previcid,
which
stops acid production. My question; Wouldn’t both of these cause food to stay
in my stomach even longer. I really want to eat health, but when I try I get
into trouble.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Regarding portions, mine are extremely
small, like 1 chicken leg from the wing, a piece of steak 1/1/2 inches long by

Lap-Band Adjustable Gastric Bankging Sys.

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

I’m hoping that there is someone out there that has had this
procedure done. I have seen the doctor and the suggestion was made.
I think is sounds great, safer then a bi-pass and faster recovery and
good results. I have read all the emails posted and saw nothing with
regards to this. Is there anyone out there that can share info with
me on this topic. I’m in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Thank You In Advance
