Death rate

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Thanks everyone for your imput. I can’t get a hold of my girl friend. They
just got back from a medical convention in Atlanta…She didn’t read about it
like I had posted earlier, her husband had had some kind of conferance about it.
Bottem line is this. He is NOT a bariatric surgoen. And he made the comment
when he was told I am doing it….”It should only be done as a last resort.
There VERY DANGEROUS. He obviosly hasn’t done any homework on this
subject…and has scared my friend(his wife) half to death about what I am about
to do.
But when he reportedly came up with those figures, I just had to check them out
on this list to see if any you all had these figures.
Thanks
Brenda
ps When I do find out what report he got it from, i will let ya’ll no.
Merry Christmas!

UCLA management still horrible

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Seems another person has had problems with UCLA!!!!! I also had problems with
their “management” and they treated me HORRIBLE! I too went to PB and had the
surgery successfully. My problem with UCLA was in Jan of 2002….guess they
still didn’t get rid of the ones who are so bad. I’ve never been treated so bad
in my life…I was just upset to know that they are still hurting people like
this…one would hope they would treat people as “patients” not files. Oh
well…hopefully will see posts like these and take that into consideration when
choosing a facility….its not just the doctors…the office staff needs to be
on the ball too.

death rate after surgery??

Monday, October 30th, 2006

I got a call from a friend of mine who is married to a surgeon…She said they
just recently read a report that said the rate of death during surgery is 1 in
200. that was fine. but she then went on and said that AFTER surgery in the
first 30 days it is 1 in 50 with an experianced surgeon, and 4 times greater
with an unexperianced surgeon. I didn’t relize the statistics were so high.
Anyone else hear this?
Thanks
Brenda
patiently waiting for her surgery.

Seizures

Monday, October 30th, 2006

To make a long story short, I had my second RNY revision in March
2001, from which I suffered near fatal complications. I survived
the coma and many months of recovery being told that I would make a
complete recovery. After about 18 months, I suffered my first grand
mal seizure, even though we did not know that is what it was at the
time. No one was around when I went down to witness any seizure
activity, I was simply found unconscious on the floor. About a week
later, the same thing happened. I had been admitted to the hospital
and had every test ran. Epilepsy was ruled out. Cardiac problems
ruled out. No test returned a positive result.
My doctor then started investigating the possibility of it being a
metabolic problem. In the mean time, I had returned to work and
thought the “passing out” as it was called, was just a minor bump in
the road. Then I had another episode, this time witnessed by my
coworkers and it was determined to be a grand mal seizure. Admitted

Need Help and Advice

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Hi Everyone,
I’m almost 2 years out and just had a baby 8 weeks ago, so I’ve been
nursing during the last two months. Anyway, I started having these
really wierd spells where I get the cold sweats and sick, shakey and
really weak. Its similar to when I dump but I haven’t eaten anything
recently enough to make me dump.
I’ve doubled my vitamins and am trying to get more protein in. I’ve
got an appointment with my doctor too but you guys are often much
more knowledgeable than he is and I figure someone out there has
probably had this happen.
Let me know if anyone has a clue as to what is going on with me.
Thanks very much.

9 mos out-need menu amts to compare

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

I’m 9 months out from an Proximal RNY(150 cm), with a 60 cc pouch; or so I was
told; now I wonder. I have always been “behind” in my total lost, (88
#)compared to others on the board. But until now, I’ve put that to:
1. having my thyroid removed,
2. both ankles full of metal, very little walking tolerated, but stationary
biking is ok–10 miles a day right now.
Can some post-ops out about the same length of time, tell me what amounts you’re
eating ? Even from the time I got home, it’s seemed like I “could ” (if I were
to push the issue) always hold more then 2 ozs. Now- at 9 months out, I don’t
have a clue as to how much is normal for this stage.
breakfast-2 eggs, scambled OR 1 egg & 1/2 english muffin, OR 1 egg omelet w/ham
lunch- mini meatloaf (5 ozs raw wt) OR 2 chicken tenders,boiled-either meat with
1/4 cup CCheese
Snack- 2 cu inches cheese, OR 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
Dinner- some type of meat - 5 ozs raw weight, 1/2 cup green beans (most of the

Mixing Protein

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

To all,
I would like to solicit some opinions on something. My nutritionist did
NOT emphasize that water was a must in mixing protein. In fact, the
recommendation was that we use 1% milk or skim milk in mixing. That is
what I have been doing since surgery (Aug. 22nd), and have not had any
problem getting in my protein, and rather enjoy it. I am open to
switching to mixing it with water, IF it is really a significant
difference in fostering weight-loss. I have seen a couple of posts that
seemed to emphasize this, and was wondering if I was the only one using
1% milk. I am sure that the water/ice mixture will be less palatable.
My pre-op weight was 411. I am now 347. That is in 3.5 months, without
exercise. I value your opinions. Thanks.
Danny

Suggestions regarding what you’re eating

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

You gotta keep trying to eat food. You didnt have this surgery to to be a
totally malnourished cripple, didja? You could live on protein shakes and
vites, if you are willing to get a good vitamin and mineral supplement regimen,
and drink 6-8 protein shakes a day. Are you taking calcium citrate, iron (not
ferrous sulfate!), vit C, B complex, zinc, and a dry E, dry A & D? But,
eventually, youre gonna hafta eat. Its just not realistic to think you can
live on drinks for the rest of your life. And you wont want to. Eventually,
your appetite will return, youll be recovered, and your friends and family will
get tired of sitting in your living room while you drink protein. Theyll wanna
go out to eat, to holiday dinners, etc.
I would up the protein drinks - women need *at least* 60 grams of protein just
to maintain. You are healing, burning fat, and you want to build muscle, all of
which require more protein. And you’ll absorb only part of the protein you
consume. Try using 1.5 scoops of protein powder per shake, and take 2-3 a day,
minimum.
