I used to be a social drinker, now I have almost no tolerance for alcohol so
I dont drink more than a sip. IMO you shouldn’t have any for the first year.
It’s a sugar that is fully absorbed and it’s very hard on the digestive
system and the liver.

Okay in answer to your questions:
Can you still enjoy a social drink now and then and what is tolerated? Well
yes you can enjoy one now and then and tolerance varies. HOWEVER, gastric
bypass patients get drunk on very little therefore if you drink ANYTHING do
NOT drive. Many have reported that they have been stopped and charged with
DUI after only 1 or two drinks. Individuals have lost licenses, faced jail
time, and received other punishments for imbibing only a little.
I am a bit harsh when it comes to this because I say they deserved it. Everyone
has heard the saying DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! Well after WLS that is a definite.
DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING ALCOHOLIC and DRIVE! If you do you are risking hurting
some innocent soul because you decided to get drunk (yes even on 1 beer) and
then stupidly drive. And you may not even FEEL drunk. So don’t think you can
handle any alcohol if you are responsible for driving.
Also, the liver takes more of a beating when you drink postWLS because the
part of the intestine that normally breaks down alcohol has been bypassed.
We are more susceptible to cirrhosis of the liver and alcoholic pancreatitis
after surgery than we were before hand. The risks are greatly increased.
How long should you wait to drink? Well not the first day out but it varies.
Ask your surgeon what he suggests. Usually by the time you are back on a
full diet you can have a little.
Do be aware that many people who are or were morbidly obese have compulsive
personalities. We are apt to trade one compulsion (overeating) for another
(alcoholism, overspending, or whatnot). If you start thinking you are doing
that please seek counseling or other intervention.
As for the types of drinks you should avoid — mixed drinks that are made
with fruit cocktails or even some fruit juices (depending on what your
individual tolerance is). You also might want to avoid cream drinks and
fruit flavored drinks (think wine coolers and kaluha and cream). Straight
liquor (whisky and scotch and bourbon) may be less likely to make you dump.
Hope this helps.
