questions about post op illness
Hi,
I just went in yesterday to see my surgeon for my 6 wk check-up.
I am actually 9 wks but I have been sick excessively. My surgeon was
a total jerk and thats putting it nicely. I have to say if you dont
care for your surgeon before surgery look for someone else. I didnt
particularily like my surgeon but didn’t want to start the whole
approval process over again. I should have it was a mistake.
Anyhow I had to ask questions this time and it was like how dare
I question the surgery. I asked if I was distal or proximal and was
told I am distal with about 200cm bypassed. which is good or bad? So
then I asked what that meant in terms of malabsorbation and he
snapped at me it didnt matter that wasnt how the surgery worked. I
just wanted to know how much of my vitamins wasnt getting absorbed.
I have been really sick since a week home from the hospital. I have
like upper respitory and broncitis I can’t breathe my sinus’s are
full, terrible headache, and a really bad chest cough. Almost like a
seal or croup type cough and I can’t get the mucus out of my lungs.
Anyhow my pcp is 2 hrs away I have moved and havent found a new one.
So I asked the surgeon if he could recommend someone and I was
informed they are not a referral service. I asked if the surgery
could be why I cant get well…he said the surgery has nothing to do
with me being sick. But I informed him prior to surgery I could go
all winter in shorts and sweat shirt and never get sick. Now I have
been running between 101-103 temps and have been thru 2 courses of
antibodics also all the over the counter meds we are allowed and
still not better. I am soo cold all the time I hurt. I made my DH
buy 2 electric heaters and he is sweating because wherever I am at I
have one on me.
Also I am getting bruises all over without knowing how or why and
I have history of anemia. So I asked if he could check my iron
levels and was told he would at 3 months. I asked if I should start
taking iron in the mean time also was told no.
I need someones help or advice I start to feel a little better
and workout again then a few days later I am so sick again that I
can’t go up 3 flights of stairs without going into a 20 min coughing
fit. My surgeon feels his job ended when he left the operating room
although I am supposed to follow up for the next 2 years. I don’t
even want to go back to see him again. I have lost 56 lbs and i need
to workout. How do I get better and stay well?
Thanks for anyones help this group is great everyone is so helpful
and nice I am lucky to have you guys to talk to.

Debbie, I am sorry to hear how ill you have been and how horrible your
surgeon is acting. What I would do is call your PCP and ask him/her for a
referral.
If they are not able to do that because of not knowing anyone in your area,
call the hospitals physicians referral line. You can ask them to refer you to
someone that meets any criteria you may have. Just think of the kind of doc you
want and they will try to match you up. YOu could also tell us what city/town
you are in. Chances are, someone on here is in the same town and they can
maybe help you. Good luck!
