XPost: Low carb v. Low Fat diets

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Interesting points from article, Measuring Myths and Realities: Low Carb Diets
Exposed by Dr. Fred Pescatore of Centers for Integrative and Complementary
Medicine.
Dr. Pescatore said . . .
They didnt teach nutrition in medical school.
Apple juice has more sugar than the same amount of soda pop.
Bodies metabolize sugar first (including milk), because it requires no
expenditure of energy to use sugar. Then simple carbs (white breads, pasta,
etc.), complex carbs (vegs, brown rice, legumes, whole grain products), then
protein, and lastly, fat.
High carb, low fat diet can NEVER correct insulin imbalance or any underlying
cause of obesity because it is too high in sugar.
When you eat a low carbohydrate, high protein diet, your body can better
metabolize the the food that you eat and the insulin levels return to normal,
and the weight comes off.

can’t believe it

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Hi All,
Y’know, this morning I was thinking that I was eating too much food, but
when I checked my scale, well, WOW! I am down 50lbs in less than two months.
WOW! I finally had the chance to get on my treadmill and do some toning
yesterday, the first chance since my bout with the blockage and then the
stones, and I am sure that’s what did the loss. I just wish I could exercise
every day, but my work schedule prevents it. After a twelve hour day, I’m
dead. So my three day weekend is all I have and I try to make the most of
it.
Here’s what I ate yesterday:
4oz prune juice: 7am
1 egg:8am
am protein shake:10am
2 1/2oz crab meat w/med. salsa:12:30pm
1/2oz

New to site in PA

Friday, November 24th, 2006

Hi,
I am new to this site and I am considering weight loss surgery. I
have a workshop to attend on Jan. 28. I was wondering if anyone can
give me any advice or the ins and outs of the surgery. Any problems
you may had I should be aware of? I know it’s not going to be easy
and I just want to be prepared.

RnY and gas

Friday, November 24th, 2006

On the contrary, RnYers can and do have problems with gas. It’s not whether you
had open or lap RnY, it’s how much gut was bypassed. The shorter your common
channel (the working part), the less digestion takes place, and the more likely
you are to have gas. I’ve got 60″ left, and gas *can* be a problem if I eat the
wrong things. YMMV.
For me, carbs cause the problem in varying degress . . . potatoes and wheat are
worst. Corn is better than most of the others. Sugar alcohols are always a
problem, but even normies experience that.
All of that aside, I believe that the original poster was a real newbie . . .
which may be the source of the problem. Many of us have problems with gas and
diarrhea for the first few months, until a certain level of healing is achieved,
and the system “gets used to” food.
Try watching the carbs, eat mostly meats and veggies, depending on what your
diet plan is like right now. If your doc has you on clear liquids or purees,
then stick to that.

Barbara Thompson author of the book “Weight Loss Surgery, Finding the Thin
Person Hiding Inside You.”, newsletter recently sent this call for help:
I Need Your Help!
Would you like to have the opportunity to assist me in helping a group of
physicians to understand the importance and effectiveness of weight loss
surgery? This month I will be speaking to a group of family practice
physicians and endocrinologists about the improvement of health following this
surgery.
If you would like to be one of the cases that I cite, send me your details and
your before and after pictures. I will need:
1. Your health problems prior to surgery
2. Specifically how your health has improved following surgery
3. Your before and after pictures (necessary)
4. Your first and last name, city, and State.
Many of you have been so generous in helping me with other projects, so I am

Thanks to all–reaching goal!!

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Hi all–
It’s been months since I’ve posted, however I’ve been reading and
taking great support from the comments, the discussions, the
feedback. This is such a great group with incredibly helpful and
compassionate members and I just want you to know that all of you
effect many more people than you know.
It’s been nearly 9 months since my RNY– and I am AT GOAL!!!
I’ve lost 150lbs, with your help, with your words, with your
encouragement, with everything you have written to keep on track.
The biggest change for me started with a conversation with my surgeon
at my one-month checkup…I pass along her words–comments to a
confirmed coach potato: If you really want to make this work and keep
it off, EXERCISE. I started with walking, as far as I could, which
wasn’t much since I was out of breath after 3 blocks. However, every
walk I would go half a block further than I thought I could…until

Applying for insurance coverage?

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Hello to all…I am self employeed and have not had insurance
coverage since my divorce. I am now applying to Pres and BCBS here in
New Mexico. I haven’t sent the packets yet and I wonder. Should I put
my current wt(240) and probably be rejected and then get coverage
thru NM Insurance alliance or what do you think? Has anyone had the
surgery here in NM with the NMIA paying? Please give me any info you
have. Thanks so much. Jona

Holly & no fat question . . .

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Holly -
The “no-fat” guideline is what many of these people have been taught, but it’s
wrong! All of us *need* at least 15% of our diet to be fat, or we won’t even
burn fat. And as Denise said, we need fat to keep us healthy, happy, and soft.
And besides, if you had RnY, you’ll malabsorb at least some of the fat you eat.
Carbs, OTOH, are still absorbed 100% . . . from lips to exit. :o)
Biggest question for me? Are you getting enough protein and fat to actually
fuel a fat-burning metabolism? Do you get *at least* 60-90 grams of
protein/day? That’s 6-9 oz of meat! If not, try some no/low sugar protein
drinks, preferably whey protein. Check out VitaLady.com.
Good luck, and don’t go *no fat* . . . it doesn’t work!

How Long Does this Last???

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Was wondering if you long timers still have this gas problem, or
does it go away with time??? Does it have any thing to do with the
malabsorbtion?? Annette
