Bill in W. Va has an opinion
So far, Bill, you have misquoted me, and mischaracterized everything I have
said. I did *not* post the 1 in 200 number, that was the original poster, the
worried mom. I said that the 1/200 number was .5%, and you attacked my math.
I have provided a study that backs up my 1.5% figure. Where’s your number come
from, other than being repeated over and over again?
You said I cited a lap study . . . the study clearly says “This study of over
3000 open and laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures reported a 1.5% mortality
and 3% leak rate.”
You can continue to argue, or you can back up what you say. Either back it up,
*online* that is, in this group, or drop it.
This is one of the reasons why it is common ‘net courtesy to quote the part of a
message you are replying to. So you don’t misquote, reply to wrong person, etc.
You seem to recall wrong, or else I’m not understanding your argument. So if
you wanna continue this worthless argument, read the archives and post a study
that supports your position. As you said, be prepared to be challenged, when
you are so obviously wrong. Where did you get this .5% figure? Post even one
large study that supports it. I haven’t seen one, and do my research in
MedScape and MedLine.
As to your condescending explanation about teaching hospitals having higher
rates, I don’t remember that study saying that all the patients were from that
hospital. Teaching hospitals conduct studies on other institution’s
patients *all* the time. It’s *part* of what they do . . . teaching and
studying.

Rachel,
The ASBS has done a study of over 14000 post op patients (and considering
the number of patients that have this surgery is approximately at 60,000 at
this point that is a good size sample) and when I checked their website
while writing my paper over the summer and fall (www.asbs.org) the stats
they give for mortality rate is 0.17% — far less than 0.5 or 1.5% ..
however that site also mentions the 0.5 percent rate.
