Donuts
Hi all,
Over the weekend, I watched a show on Discovery Health covering some stars
who had gastric bypass surgery, Al Rowker, Carnie Wilson and, unknown to
me, Roseann Barr. They also had some of their menu’s listed, and I was
floored to hear that Roseann’s included DONUTS!! How in the name of Sam
Hill can she eat donuts? Even a small amount of sugar like that found in
some otc meds makes me ‘dump’. No wonder she only lost 80lbs compared to
the amounts of 100+ the rest had. Scary, isn’t it? At least it was to me.
I’ve had some issues with carbs lately, but now it’s gone. I tried several
different things, but nothing tasted good, other than the pretzels. Whole
wheat toast, Wheat Thins, Triscuit, and a few others. They all tasted like
cardboard. So, I bought some dry roasted peanuts, reading the label to
make sure there was no sugar in the process, and munch a handfull when I
feel the salt/crunch demon sneaking up on me. It does the trick. I used to
love my carbs. Not any more. I hope that it stays that way. The only bad
thing that’s happened is I’ve gained 2 and a half pounds over the last
week. I think it’s just ‘that time of the month’ hormone thingy because my
clothes are not any tighter. As a matter of fact, the new shirts I bought
are a little looser, so I know I’m not getting bigger. That is scary too.
I NEVER want to go back there. I hated the way I was, and want to stay
here. All the help and encouragement I get from each and every one of you
will, I know, help me continue on this path. I am including my menu from
yesterday, just for reference. Thanks all.
Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1 slice whole wheat toast w/a little butter
lunch: 6oz tuna, two minced dill pickles, 4tbsp low fat mayo, 1/4c minced
onion
Snack: two handsfull of peanuts and 3 strawberries
Supper: 5oz monk fish and a salad w/low fat dressing
Water, kool-aid galore and my vitamins. No shakes.
I am very careful not to graze on anything, even veggies. I eat at
planned times, and drink only in between.

I had an RNY. I used to dump like crazy. While pregnant, I found the only
thing I could keep down for any length of time was sweets — I tried a bite
of a donut and it didn’t make me sick. Before I got pregnant I got sick on a
dab of cool whip which had 2g of sugar per serving. Literally a lick would
have me heaving. After I got pregnant, my body would only keep down stuff
that was a bit sweet. It was annoying.
Just because you have RNY doesn’t mean you will dump. It doesn’t happen to
everyone. Also, as you get further out your system may change to allow you
to tolerate more. you may think you won’t touch sugar ever but many people
eventually try it be it inadvertently or just wanting a bite of something
(wedding cake, birthday cake or something of that nature). I went without
sugar for a year with the exception of the lick of cool whip I had put on a
serving of NSA pudding. When that made me sick I avoided anything that had
added sugar — even those things that were supposedly safe. At five years
out I could tolerate sugar easily. Large quantities still made me sick as
did sugars added to liquidy things (ice cream, pudding, creams, pop, other
beverages). I have now been off sugar over three weeks and notice that i
physically feel better. I dont feel as run down and have more energy. I have
been getting headaches every other day since quitting the sugar but I will
deal with them.
