What should I take to the hospital?

This is my first time posting. I am having surgery on September 2nd, 2004. I
am wondering what I need to take to the hospital. I don’t want to pack too
much, yet I am afraid I will forget something important. If you have any
advice, I would sure appreciate your input. Thank you for all your support, as
I have been “lurking” for about six months. I have learned so much from those
of you who have posted.

The most used items I took to the hospital were my chap-stik, moisturizer and
pillow. Leave everything else home. You won’t need it.

I eat mustard. The choice is clear.

    Angela,
I didnt take any gowns, just used theirs. I took a short robe that
wrapped around, and slippers I slid my feet into. Take a couple of
magazines, playing cards, toothpaste, deoderant, toothbrush, comb and
you are ready!!! You will most likely only be in for about 3 days,
if no complications. The less ya pack, the better!!! Best wishes to
    you!!!

P.S. Dont forget your insurance card

When I went I took a whole passel of stuff. I took a bag with a book and a
book of word games and even a CD player with one or two of my favorite CDs.
I took a suitcase of nightgowns and robes. I took some Deodorant (this one
is OK) and some moisturizer and even some chap stick concotion.
I found out that for the first few days I could’ve cared less if I was in a
sack. No nightgown or robe needed. After those few days were up and I was up
and walking around I still didn’t care what the heck I wore as long as the
pain stopped and it hide my behind and front.
So at the end of this all I really needed to take was a change of
    clothes–including unders/bra—pants or shorts or whatever and a shirt—shoes
    too. I
took along slip-on shoes. Very simple.
I never used any of the things I took, although the robe does come in handy I
still didn’t even use that. When you are feeling kinda miserable you simply
don’t care what you have on.

Just go simple. Think about what you will need when you go to leave. OH of
course a brush. I didn’t even use my own tooth brush. They simply handed me
a new one and some paste and away I went. I did use my deodorant though.
Hope that was kind of helpful.

One thing I *didn’t* take, but wished I had, was shampoo. It hadn’t
occurred to me that they’d let me take a shower with a stapled open
    incision…but they did!
Other than that, very little. You might also want to make sure you
have a top that will preserve your modesty if you don’t wear a bra
home, depending on where your incision(s) are it may be a couple of
weeks before you’re comfortable wearing one.
