On celery and other raw veggies . .

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

month (for our fisrt month, we are on *clear* liquids and protein shakes).
*****Everyone is different. My surgeon had me OFF *clear* liquids after
24 hrs and on to full liquids (cream soups, s/f pudding, yogurt, etc). for
one week then soft foods.
*****My surgeon cautions against celery, due to strings knotting (no matter
how well you chew) and blocking stoma. Ditto for stringy ends of sweet
potatoes.
If you have questions on any food you should eat/avoid turn to your surgeon
or staff nutritionist for advise.

How long was it before you all were starting on raw veggies? I’m 8 weeks out
and haven’t had the nerve to try them yet.

kickboxing?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I went to a kickboxing class today. I toned it down a little.
Instead of jumping I did stepping. No ab work. I left that out, but
I’m still in a bit of pain. I’m a month out on the 15th. I also,
feel a little neasious. That I’m not sure if it is because I might
have drank my water too fast or because of the exercise. Am I
rushing it too fast?

New member - question

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Hi everyone. I’m new here and have a couple of questions. I am a
vegetarian and am awaiting approval for WLS. Is there anyone out
there who is either a vegetarian or a vegan who can give hints on how
to keep up your protein intake after having surgery? This is my only
real concern (well, besides the actual surgery!) about having this
done. I don’t want to be forced to eat meat as it’s a moral issue
for me.
Also, when you see people who you haven’t seen in a few years, and
you’ve had the surgery and lost, do you generally tell them you had
the surgery? I feel like this is a personal issue and choice. What
have you done in the past?
Thanks
Melinda

On celery and other raw veggies . . .

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I’m 18 months out, and have been eating raw veggies since the second month (for
our fisrt month, we are on *clear* liquids and protein shakes).
For a while (in the beginning), I cut celery across the strings, to make sure I
didn’t do anything dumb. Slcing it really thinly, or dicing would do the same
thing.
But, yes, I apparently chew better than you. And if you’re scared of raw
veggies, how *do* you eat meat? It’s much harder to get to small, discrete
particles than veggies are. And bread wads. So, meat, bread and veggies
*could* all block us . . .
Raw veggies, especially celery, are wonderful things. I don’t feel *good*
unless I have some every day. And they must be chewed well. I actually read
something a couple yuears ago, which said that most of us (everyone) don’t . . .
it said that you should not notice swallowing. That chewing well would cause
much of the food to be swallowed in tiny bits as we chewed . . . leaving barely
anything to swallow at the end.

A newbie here with surgery scheduled for 8.18

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Hello Everyone,
My name is Julie, I am a newbie to this group and I am scheduled for
rny in less than a week! (8/18) I cant believe the waiting is almost
coming to an end. I have a couple questions and was wondering if
anyone can help point me in the right direction…
First, what are the best things to have home in the fridge after
surgery? I live alone and am trying to make sure I have things not to
have to go out and go shopping right after this surgery. I have s/f
popsicles, s/f jello, broth and crystal light.
Also is there anyone who has had the nisson procedure several years
prev to having wls surgery (the nisson procedure is the ‘wrap’ they
do is wrap the stomach around the top of you stomach so you dont have
any more reflux/heartburn symptoms). The doctor has to ‘undo’ the
nisson wrap before doing the actual wls. I know it is not common
situation, but if there is anyone out there that has had that, I

milestones <long>

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Hi,
I am happy to say today and am offically under 200#. I weigh 199 as
of today and have lost 126 so far. I hope to lose another 39 pounds
and then start the fight with the insurance to remove the skin. I
will be 9 months post op on the 17th. In the last 9 months I have
gone from a size 28 stretch jeans to a 14/16 regular jeans. My
shirts have gone from a 30/32 plus size to a lg/xlg in regular
womens sizes. I still have problems with looking in the mirror and
seeing the same fat person that I saw before surgery but hopefully
with time my brain will catch up with my body. On the positive I
havent been this small since jr high. I am no longer at risk of
having a stroke from high blood pressure I am not diabetic any
longer. Now I can exercise daily without getting out of breath and
having an asthma attack. And i think best of all is I am finally
going back to school and will be able to fit in those stupid desks

new drink

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Don’t know if I posted this before or not, but in case I didn’t, I found a new
sf drink. This is sweetened with Splenda, for those of us who can’t tolerate
aspertame. It’s called Carb Solutions by Lipton. It is a tea that comes in three
flavors, reg, with lemon, decaff w/lemon and green tea with lemon. They taste
pretty good and it sure is nice to find a tea that doesn’t hurt the joints.
Nona
-104 and lovin’ it.
