Had RNY in May 2003 lost 140……HELP gained 20 back!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help me please,
2003 had the RNY, lost 140 but gaining back. I have been
happier than I have been in many years, why am I letting this
happen? Am I eatting right? NO Am I exercising? NO. I eat sweets
by the handfulls,and don’t get sick like I used to right after
surgery. I’m not asking anyone to feel sorry for me, I’m at fault.
But I have no will power and need some encouragement. I never went
below 200lbs, I can live with that, but to gain after all I went
though??? Need to come to my senses.
I would like to hear from anyone who can help or relate.
Help me please,
GINA

    Gina,
    I can’t completely relate to the gaining back weight, because
    although I have had some very long plateaus and never got to goal, I
    haven’t had a gain of more than four pounds since my surgery in
    August 2002. I can tell you that your post sounds painful and it
    sounds like you are blaming yourself for your apparent failure.
    Even if you never got below 200, I am assuming your health is better
    than before the surgery? Don’t set yourself up for a weight or a
    size, set a goal for a feeling or a health milestone.
    It sounds like you were completely relying on the surgery to cure
    you of your eating problems, which it cannot do. I have more
    difficulty eating certain foods than many of my friends who have had
    the same surgery, so I have not been guilty of eating handfuls of
    sweets, but my friend, you know the rules of how you need to eat
    post-op. The RNY to me is the closest thing to a magic cure as

    there is. Now take that magic and apply it to yourself. Protein
    first, lower carb veggies and greens next, fruits on occasion,
    breads/pastas/cereals/grains/sweets rarely to never. Some posties
    are so lucky and they can eat anything they want after surgery and
    never gain an ounce. I would say that is a rare person. Most
    struggle with what they can eat and how much and eventually fall
    into synch with their own body and rythms. Myself, I can eat
    microwave popcorn until I am horribly uncomfortable. Now I restrict
    myself to one popcorn serving per week–longer if I can stand it,
    and I force myself to share the bag with either my family or if
    nobody is around, the dogs! I have a horrible habit of eating at
    night, so I have to make rules for myself about that, too.
    Otherwise, every half hour, I am switch-eating. I will eat popcorn
    or some other evil food, and then go for a bowl of sugar free ice
    cream and then later, some fruit….In half an hour and eating all
    those simple carbs, I can eat again and again. The problem is that
    although I CAN do that, it is not helpful toward my health and
    fitness goals. I have a sweet tooth, also, but I have to rely upon
    sugar free candies. You will find that if you switch to those, you
    probably won’t overindulge as much–too many of them and they will
    give you horrible intestinal cramps, gas and diarrhea. Unless you
    live alone in a cave and don’t have a job, you won’t do that on a
    daily basis.
    First thing you should do is see your surgeon and find out if
    there is something gone wrong with your surgery. Some people
    stretch their pouch, sometimes the pouch isn’t completely transected
    and there is a staple line rupture that enlarges the stomach back to
    the original size. There might be something from a medical
    standpoint that your surgeon needs to repair. You didn’t mention if
    you had been following up with your surgeon, so I am assuming you
    have not.
    Exercise? I go months without exercising regularly and then I
    kick it into gear for a few weeks and then fall back into some of my
    old habits. As you can gather from my post, I am not the poster
    child for weight loss surgery. I weigh 183 and have lost only 9
    pounds in the past year. We know that the first year is the best
    year. It is up to all of us to make the most of the rest of our
    lives. In general, I do more exercise just living than I did before
    my surgery because it is easier to move. I don’t mind running up
    and down the stairs a few dozen times a day when I do laundry or
    clean house. It doesn’t hurt to run to the mailbox or take the dogs
    on an ever so brief walk to the pet store or around the block, so I
    count these little things as my exercise. I canceled my gym
    membership because it was a source of guilt and blame for me. I was
    paying for it monthly and not going for weeks on end. I bought a
    couple of exercise videos from yard sales and when I’m in the mood
    to really push myself, I get one of those out and work on it. I
    also rollerblade and bicycle now with my family, so that counts,
    too.
    The point is, all this emotional beating yourself up won’t help
    you to solve your problem. Take a good look at where you were
    before surgery and where you are now. I think you see an
    improvement–you have lost over 100 pounds! Be proud of that and
    keep working on the rest. After you rule out physical reasons for
    the regain, ask yourself if a few sessions of counseling might help
    you get your eating under control? Or, can you make up and follow
    rules for yourself like I do? You have accomplished a tremendous
    thing and you can’t lose sight of that.
    Good luck in whatever you decide is right for you
    Mary

    I’m in the same boat. I can now eat sugar and do. Im up to 200lbs this morning.
    I don’t seem to have the power to stop, either. I just don’t know what to do
    with myself. I know this week, when I go shopping I will NOT buy anything I
    shouldn’t have. My hubby won’t mind. He will just go to his mom’s for snacks. I
    don’t dump anymore and that scares me. Maybe we can help each other get through
    this. Anyone have any ideas?

    ~~~~~do you feel you deserve to be happy? do you LOVE yourself? I
    really struggle with approving of myself, liking myself, giving
    myself any positive feedback. I am a very negative person about
    myself. If I was half as kind and forgiving of myself as I am
    others, my life would be much happier! SO, what am I doing about
    this attitude problem? I have an area in my home office that I am
    filling with positive things, like before and after photos, my weight
    loss graph, a list of the 9 rules for successful postWLS weight loss,
    love notes from friends, scriptures, and wonderful quotes.
    ~~~~~example: from New Testament, “I can do ALL things through
    Christ, who strengthens me.” from Dr Seuss, “Be who you are and say
    what you fell, because those who matter don’t mind, and thoae that

    mind, don’t matter.”
    You are a precious child of God.
    Remember, He wants you to be happy, He will help you if you just ask.

    ~~~~~~~~so, it is a new year. Purge your home of crap! Period! You
    say, “but my family will be upset” TOUGH #$%$#! They may like the
    crap, but it isn’t any better for them to have it than you! After
    you get in control a bit, you can bring back some junk foods into the
    house that don’t interest you. EX. right now I crave crisp, dry
    crackers, panetini, croutons, etc. but don’t care for greasy potato
    chips anymore…so, I have individual sized bags of chips in house
    for my spouse.
    ~~~~~~~~~get out your cups and scales and weigh every single thing
    that goes into your mouth! Your pouch should hold about a cupful, so
    don’t eat more than 1-2 cups, period. Eat proteins first, vegies
    second, fruits third, and carbs only if you still have room in your
    portions! Ex. last night I had Mandarin Chicken from Panda Express,
    and mixed a heaping tablespoon of rice in with it.
    ~~~~~~~~~journal your food EVERY day EVERY bite! I PROMISE you will
    eat less if you write it down! You have a computer, so go to
    <www.fitday.com
    you first had surgery? Go back and read what you were eating when
    you were successful! And fix yourself the SAME meals!
    ~~~~~~~~~start over with your postop foods. Go on clear liquids for
    a day or two…you will be hungry, but you won’t die from it! Then
    go on full liquids for a few more days. Then go to pureed foods for a
    few days. Then, start back on healthy proteins, etc. Sometimes the
    restarting will help you get back on track!

    ~~~~~~~~OK, why not? You don’t like feeling better? You haven’t
    made it a priority? It’s too cold outside! Well, no more excuses!
    Again, may I suggest going back to your initial postop status?
    Esp. if you are where the weather is cold. Grab your car keys, drive
    to your nearest Walmart/Kmart/Target/etc. Lock your wallet in the
    car (you are here to walk, not blow your budget), grab a cart and
    walk EVERY isle at least once! After you have done that a few days,
    drive to your nearest big indoor mall, lock your wallet in the car,
    and do some laps!
    ~~~~~~~~~now, are you worth $30 a month? Is your health? Of course!
    So find a Curves or another women’s workout spot, and get up and go
    there three times a week. I go at 6am before going to work, as I
    never, ever seem to get there after work. Do I hate getting up 30″
    earlier? yes. Do I feel better the days I go? Absolutely. Do I feel
    happier with myself when I go? You bet I do!
