About the wheelchair thing …

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

So I dont have to rent one here and shlep it down to brazil, that is a good
thing, because i hear that the chair is useless in curitba anyway, cobblestones
and all …
but see here is my question (and these are hypotheticals cause doc Z hasnt
called back for me to confirm with doc M when I can come) but anyway …
OK Sample Itinerary
Phila to Miami American Airlines
miam to sao paulo Varig
sao paulo to curitiba TAM
so, philly is easy, american airlines wheels me to their terminal
but when I have the flight crew call down to miami, is American Airlines
responsible for getting me to the Varig gate? or does Varig have the
responsibility once I arrive at their gate?
critcal importance is the brazilian airports, language may be a barrier
coming into sao paulo, which carrier wheels me thru customs / immigration /

Finally got it done!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Hi everyone. Just got home and wanted to say HI.
I had my RNY done on monday(3/14/05) at about 12noon. (I weighted in at 335#.)
The first 3 days I don’t remember much….being tired and on a morphine drip.
The last 2 days I had some pain, not bad enough to need anything for. The worst
time was when I had a reaction of sorts from some “light and fit” yogurt with
vanilla. I ended up on the camode for about an hour with diarriah and the dry
heaves. The nurses thought that I may be lactose intolerant. One of the girls
from my local support group says that I may have experienced my first ‘dumping’.
(She was the operation just before me.) The surgeon said that it just may be
that my system is not ready for yogurt yet, especially since I tolerated the
milk they gave me.

Dr Z will call soon, and a few thoughts

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

My nephrologist will be calling to clarify two points for me, one; does he
think i need dialysis NOW and two; does a permacath ruin the vessels in the
respective arm
if I get no no, I go.
on wills: my living will can be summed up in a single sentence, If I will be
paralyzed or a vegetable DNR. I was a “material boy” back in my money making
days, but had to liquidate it all to survive the escalating illnesses, so that
is a non issue.
I’m a positive guy, for as much schit as I’ve been put thru in my life
(believe me, I was crushed in 86, was 850 pounds in 91, had a 105.3 “brain
cooker”
fever in 95, and then the getting smashed from behind last April that triggered
this cataclysmic kidney failure event, so I’ve been thru more than my share
of pain and suffering) I try to stay positive, up, mind open and alert, I think
I do pretty well all in all.

My doc destroyed me today, I really cant take much more of this

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

So I go in the office fairly pumped, a list of objectives in hand, and my
info for Dr Marchesini printed out for his perusal. He starts reading it and
….
you want to go to BRAZIL for surgery? What about your appointment to get the
access for dialysis put in?
I dont want to wait a year for that to mature, I want to go in a few weeks.
Well, your nephrologist mentioned that you wanted to get weight loss surgery
but hes more concerned with you being able to get on dialysis.
YOU told me to go get WLS! HE told me to go get WLS! FORGET THAT ITS IN
BRAZIL, what about the proceedure itself???
its likely to push you into dialysis, how are they going to administer it?
Put in a permacath! (permanent catheter that can last a year or more
installed in the veins in the neck, exits below the collarbone (in my case,
where a
collarbone should be)

Consult Scheduled

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Hi Everyone! I have been reading everyone’s emails, and have learned a lot
because of them. I have finally taken the first step and had my physician refer
me to the surgeon who seems most competent in this area. The one thing I am a
bit worried about is that I had a hysterectomy about 2 1/2 years ago, so I’m not
sure how that will all work out, but I’m ready to hear what he has to say. I’m
33 years old and the mother of a 14 year old boy. My boyfriend and my family
are very supportive at this point. Any other women out there who’ve already had
hysterectomy, then had the RNY (open or lap?)

have been having cream of wheat and low carb yougurt for breakfast,
a scrambled egg for lunch and either mashed potatoes with baby food
chicken or cottage cheese for supper. I can only eat about 2 Tbs at
a time. I dont seem to tolerate fruit- dump on it easily. I would
love some suggestions for other things, especially protien or supper
choices to eat. According to my diet plan I cannot have deli meat
or cheese yet, nor any bread/rice/pasta etc.

Has anyone experienced or heard that drinking too much coffee can be a
hazard to us post surgery?

Any suggestions or insight?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I am a 58 year old, 5′6″, female. I had my Lap-Bypass on 01/21/04
and have only lost 79 pounds (I started at 256 pounds/51% body fat…
now 177/35%). It seems to me (after lurking around this site for
about a year) that comparatively speaking I have not had the great
weightless that most of you have had since the surgery.
I am almost always hungry. I try to eat as much protein a day as I
can (usually about 60 grams), walk when I can ride (including stairs)
and drink a gallon of liquids a day.
What am I doing wrong or should I just forget about losing any more
weight and be satisfied with the health benefits I’ve gotten from the
surgery. My Lab work is perfect…glucose 90, cholesterol 189, HDL
74… Best those have been in years without any medications.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Millie
