weight loss in strange places

Monday, June 25th, 2007

ok i’m a little over a year out of open rny with about a 90lb weight
loss, but where i’m lossing inches is making me crazy.
I will take any weight loss ofcourse, but does it even out?
my top half is gone and bottom half is gone, when does the middle go?
my chest is vanishing and my arms are going bye bye all my tops hang
off me, but the waist area can be snug. i can fit into a large shirt
if it wasn’t for the middle.
and my pants i can some times get in to 18/20, but the legs are baggy
and the waist again snug.
how can i make the middle smaller. i use to go to curves 3 to 4 times
a week, but now my work has pick up with more hours and i’m at home
alone at night with my 7year old. my job is Very physical ( I can
understand why my legs and arms are getting smaller. I’m up and down
ladders carring boxes all day and walking a lot), but what can i do
at home to make my stomach smaller. i’m hoping to get my exercise

WLS IS DIFFERENT

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I will be 63 tomarrow, had wls at 61, dieted all my life ,spent much
$$$$$$$ on every dietbook&doctor, you name it I did it, wls was the
only thing that helped, I dieted up to 320 lbs, lost 150 in little
over a year, have kepted it off, so far, but I am having problems
now, because I did open the door to sugar and flour, my enemy, I have
never regretted the wls once in 2 yrs. I had problems, but I would do
it again in a heart beat, Barb in PA.

Well, 1st of all WLS is not for anyone NOT over 100 pounds over weight….
I have to disagree with your statement. Many people are just 100 pounds
overweight, many are just under but have many medical conditions, and with this
surgery they can overcome their medical conditions, and lose the weight, keeping
it off. Those people 99 pounds overweight with a history of obesity, deserve
this surgery just as much as someone 199 pounds. This surgery is for those that
cannot keep weight off on their own, or are so much overweight they will
never lose enough to be healthy. I was just 100 pounds overweight, I worked at
my
weight loss and took all my excess weight off in the first year and have
mainteined for 3 more. I know many who were just about 100 pounds overweight or
just under with many medical problems who underwent this surgery and have

WLS…Not The Easy Way Out

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I have posted this before and thought it may help to see it again.
Perhaps something will touch those who are new to the group, those
who are trying to decide whether this surgery is for them and
families and friends who think this is the easy way out or are
afraid of losing their loved ones:
To my WL Family,
In reading over all of the posts every morning I can’t help to be so
proud and blessed to have had the opportunity to be involved with
such a courageous, beautiful and compasionate group of people.
I become very upset when I hear people say that, ” this is an easy
way out” or “use a little will power and you’ll lose weight”. Do
they not think that we have tried to do this in other ways. It’s
not as if we have the operation and the “WL Fairy” waves a magic
wand and the pounds come off while we just sit around doing
nothing. Do these people think that one morning we woke up and

New member with big trouble

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

I am sitting here with tears in my eyes after reading all your responses
to my post. I have been on several other lists and when I asked for
help I received none at all. You all are just great and I really
appreciate all your advice, you have made me feel that some one really
does care, and believe me I was beginning to wonder. All your positive
advice has lifted my spirits and given me new hope, thank you all very
much it means allot to me. I was very scared and without any one to talk
to it has been very depressing. I will follow all your recommendations
and keep you all informed in my progress.
Thanks bunches, Gloria

New member with big worries

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Hello my name is Gloria and I had my open RNY June 27, 2004 and my starting
weight was 323, I am now down to 263. I have only lost a total of 60 pounds,
but I have reached a major plateua that I just can’t break. All my blood work
comes back perfect, my diabetes is under control to the point that I no longer
take any kind of insulin at all. The problem is that I have been between 261
and 263 a little over two months now and I am terribly worried. When I returned
to my surgeon, he told me I was not losing as fast as expected and then he
breezed out of the room. He spent a total of about 5 minutes listening to my
heart and checking the incision. I felt like yelling down the hall after him, ”
run like the wind” needless to say I am greatly disapointed in his uncaring
attuitude. I am drinking so much water that I slash as I walk. I am wondering
if part of my trouble could be from having IBS with terrible constipation? I
have arthritis and fibromyalgia along with spurs on the spine withdegenerative
joint disease, so it is very painful for me to do many exercises but I push
myself through the pain and keep going. I hope you don’t thnk I am making

Visiting Program

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Hi Everyone:
My name is Towanda Strong and I am new to this group.
I am 8 months post op and loving life.
I want to put together a volunteer “visiting program” for my
surgeon’s group of patients. I contacted Barbara Thompson and
she suggested I ask people here for some advise.
And, if the group moderators can direct me to a better place to
get info, that would be gratefully appreciated as well.
My vision is this…
We post-ops volunteer to visit those new post-op patients while
they are in the hospital to bridge the gap between the hospital
stay and the initial stages of recovery. It can be a long few weeks
in the beginning and some don’t have the family/friends support
that can be vital. And I have seen some get lost in that time. I
began visiting those I met in my “group” and found it did make a

How is WLS REALLY different from diet and exercise?

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

All,
I’m new to the group, so this may have been asked before, but I am
currently researching WLS and need answers!
I have had some moderate success dieting and losing weight, the most
recent was with Body-for-Life when I lost 70lbs. The problem for me
is keeping it off for any length of time. And as I get older, it
gets harder! I am about 135lbs. overweight right now.
Everything I’m reading about WLS sounds like just another diet and
exercise program PLUS surgery. How is it different? Is it the
mental part - I had surgery so now I can’t eat or something terrible
will happen? Or is there REALLY a physical change (possibly
chemical) that makes food less attractive? (I understand the
procedure, and know the physiology, but I’m getting spooked when I
read that you have to be so careful or you’ll gain weight — I can be
careful, but I am hoping the surgery makes that easier — is that

“Personally, I don’t see that eating a bite or a 1/2 KK or treat is wrong–IF IT
DOESN’T LEAD TO MORE BAD CHOICES. ”
Not sure myself that this is possible - at least for me it takes very little to
get myself into trouble. RIght after surgery I was very diligent not to try
anything that was bad for me. For 3 months I did not purposely eat ANYTHING
that I knew was bad. While on vacation I was tempted to try a little - I had 1

about BANANAS, Interesting??? I thougt so!

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

After Reading THIS, you’ll NEVER look at a banana in the same way
again! Is all this true? I am not positive because I know alot of us will not
eat bananas at all in our groups because of the sugar, can someone update on
this if all this is true or not? THANKS,… hugs,…
BANANAS. Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and
glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and
substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas
provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the
banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.
But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can
also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and
conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst
people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a
banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein
