Because We Can

“Because We Can”
On Sunday October 16, 2005, 28 of us participated in the “Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk” in Jones Beach. Our team was
the only Bariatric Team to participate in this event. This was our
second year to participate in this walk. I am very proud of all my
teammates to get up early on Sunday morning and walked with me.
Our team name is Queensmetrowls for EC Awareness. EC awareness is
Esophageal Cancer Awareness. Esophageal Cancer has become the
fastest growing form of cancer in the United States. Approximately
14250 cases of Esophageal Cancer will be reported this year and
13250 people will die from this disease. There are no drugs
dedicated to Esophageal Cancer; there are no events dedicated to
Esophageal Cancer. There groups like The Esophageal Cancer Education
Foundation developing programs for Esophageal Cancer Awareness. A

significant percentage of people that developed Esophageal Cancer
have experienced many years of heartburn and acid reflux. These two
conditions are prevalent in obese people.
To date we have raised $2848.00 and we still expect a contribution
from the Starbucks Coffee house of $630.00 and about $600.00 from
Apple Bank. When the dust settles we will have raised almost
$4100.00. Our two Cancer related walks raised almost $12,000.00
this year.
Prior to the Breast Cancer walk we had two fund raising events. Our
first fundraiser was a bowling night and the other fundraiser was
our sixty’s seventy’s party. All of us made the party special. We
danced, laughed and had a great time “because we can.”
I would also like to thank the Survivors and the Caregivers of the
Esophageal Cancer Community for supporting me in this walk and
hopefully in future walks.
Regards,
Lenny
