DS regrets or regain?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I asked this question on obesityhelp, but no one answered, save one
person, who told me to come here and ask it, since problems are often
discussed here.
I am planning on having the DS in December. I hear frequently of
regains and regrets with the RNY and VGB, but not with the DS. Are
there any DSers out there with regrets or regain? I’d really like to
know as much as I can before having the surgery. Thanks in advance!

David Lange

, who was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1984 to 1989
died on Saturday.
David Lange had very public obesity surgery while Prime Minister. For
me, and probably for a number of others, his example helped form our
decision to have surgery.

In Need of Weight Loss Support And if Possible an Exercise Buddy….

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Hi, my name is Tiffany, I’m 25, and live in Chula Vista - San
Diego,
CA. I’ve struggled with obesity through out most of my life. I’ve
been @ 550 lbs. at the highest - 2000. I’ve struggled with
depression, loneliness, and binge & emotional eating (still am). I
was at the point where I was depressed and very isolated and
seperated from the world. I hardly have a social life (still don’t).
I do see a counselor and doctor to treat my depression.
To make a long story short, my parents helped me to get down to 397
lbs. by June 2002. It was for sure an extreme struggle for me, and
tons of stress for my parents as well. I was hardly able to walk,
move around, or take care of myself. I was in so much pain because
of my weight. I’ve tried almost every diet from A-Z, and even
considering starving myself. Of course that was too impossible
because of my binge eating problem.

Julia writes: -P.S. Surgeons who think we can get our protein from food
shouldn’t be performing the RNY, in my opinion. They do us a GRAVE disservice.
After they change our guts around, the only way for us to be able to break down
and absorb even a small amount of protein from the food we eat is for our bodies
to outgrow and to fully recover from the surgery. The research on short gut
syndrome is clear; “get it from food” surgeons are setting their patients up
for hypertrophy and likely eventual weight regain, not to mention a period of
muscle wasting and potential ill-health.
=======================================================
My surgeon has been doing this for over 30 years, he has done about 3500
procedures and has taught numerous other doctors the procedure, here and abroad.
His stance is always to get our protein from food and in the years he has been
doing it his patients have been doing just fine - I personally know a 27 year
post op of his and she’s still doing well at 71years old. She has only ever
gotten her food from protein and in all that time she hasn’t had any problems.

hair loss and coloring

I am losing my hair as is often expected. It looks crummy. Can I color it or
will that make it worse?

Hi I am new and have some questions

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Hi everyone!! My name is Michelle and I had a gastric bypass done in
Nov 2001 and I originally weighed 300lbs and I lost 152 lbs in 9
months and kept it off for 3 1/2 years until I got pregnant with my
son. (This was a huge suprise since I was told after my oldest son
that I would not get pregnant again and I did on birth control).
Well, when I was pregnant with Kaden, they were very “forceful” with
me eating more and I ended up gaining 45 lbs with him. I had him 7
months ago and have only lost 17 lbs of the 45 I have gained. I
feel like the pouch was stretched and that I never feel full. I
feel like all the hard work that I went through to accomplish my
dream was shattered. I just don’t know what to do. I am soooooo
down about this and depressed. I look at myself and feel disgusted
again. I am not sure how to get the weight off and really need some
help and support. I AM SCARED that I will gain it all back!!! Can
someone please help me, has anyone else been here?

Yep, I agree with you! I was on 3 glucophage a day for two years. I have lost

Life can be good.

DID YOUR BACK PAIN INCREASE AFTER WLS?

Friday, July 13th, 2007

hello all
I had RNY 3.21.05 at 269.6 and now weigh 233.6. I have had chronic back
pain since childhood but for the last 2 weeks by ENTIRE back has been
aching…whereas it is normally my lower back that is the daily
offender. I am used to chronic pain since i also have fibromyalgia and
I know and understand the tailbone pain since we have less cushion
there now.
any thoughts?
blessed be
Donna

Newbie with a pouch question

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

I am 6 days post op (woohoo!!!) and I’m now how on the clear liquid
stage. The instructions for this stage, provided by my VERY capable
surgeon, concern me a a bit. My “food” consists of clear liquids
(broth, juice, etc.), of course, and I’m also supposed to get 64 oz
of “fluids” (which to me ideally means water, but at this point I
would think everything on the clear liquid diet counts).
I have been told not to take in more than 1 ounce every 3 hours. I
presume these items are my “meals.” But to get 64 oz of water into a
period of 16 hours (of alleged daily consciouness) is mathematically
impossible at that rate.
Here’s the real question: I’ve been drinking water (and decaf tea)
at what I consider to be a safe, slow rate. I fill an 8-ounce glass
and sip it over the course of an hour(ish). Could I possibly I
drinking too fast for this early? I don’t feel an discernable
discomfort (although I am still a bit sore from the operation).

OT OT OT … Ranting and Rayving

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Really weird day today … kinda happy that my kid brother is down in Va
getting HIS DS done, he just came out of the OR and he’s doing well as of 9 PM,
That happiness is tempered by a terrible spike in the pain dept., body pains are
way up, and weakness is really noticeable … I had a complete power failure
today, I didn’t get unconscious or anything but I was completely unable to
move, and I was in sunshine cooking down on me I … the only thing I could do
was lay down in the shadow of my grass mower and try to get strength back.
Getting up was a strain to both of my formerly muscle bound arms, I don’t know
how
in the HELL I am going to cope with not using this left arm for a “weak”
I am exercising, eating what they tell me, taking my medicine and still Im
slipping further and further into what seems to be an inextricable abyss; I know
I sound like a broken record but I had to lie down on the ground today, AND
THATS SCARY …
Liz is having memory issues with how understanding I was when she was sick,
